The Department of Environmental Engineering, which was established in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1980, have maintained to education in the Faculty of Engineering since 1993. First master's and first doctoral degrees graduated in 1988 and 1994, respectively. In addition, master degree in English has also been carried out since 2015. The purpose of the program to train graduates who can work individually or as a team; design, construction and operation of environmental engineering processes, participate in R & D activities about environmental technologies and apply the environmental management tools for sustainable use of environmental resources. Water pollution control, water and wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, soil pollution control, air pollution control, risk analysis, environmental modeling and many other related studies are carried out in the department. Furthermore, attendance to national and international scientific activities has been performed in order to follow new scientific technologies, to test the applicability of these technologies in our country, and to discuss and introduce, in scientific platform, the developed methods and technologies in research studies. Research laboratories are available in the fields of water, wastewater, air pollution and solid waste management. Likewise, there are three student practice laboratories used for education and training purposes. Educational activities are supported by practices in addition to theoretical education. Besides, the university library provides access to a large number of printed works and national and international journals by using databases. Students catch the opportunities to improve themselves professionally via technical trips and seminars organized throughout the year. The graduates of the Department of Environmental Engineering being assigned in the municipalities, Il Bank, State Hydraulic Works, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization etc. in various public institutions, industrial facilities, in companies that produce environmental technologies and services and in voluntary organizations.
