One of the standout events at the TÜBİTAK 4007 Science, Art and Culture Festival held in Terme was the workshop titled “Let’s Calculate Our Carbon and Water Footprints.” Conducted with the participation of primary and secondary school students, the workshop offered an important learning experience aimed at understanding the environmental impacts of individual consumption habits.
During the workshop, students learned how daily activities—such as energy use, transportation choices, water consumption, dietary habits, and waste generation—affect greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Participants had the opportunity to calculate their own carbon footprints using simple calculation methods and interactive tools.
Assoc. Prof. Hülya AYKAÇ ÖZEN, Deputy Director of the OMU Environmental Issues Research and Application Center, explained practical strategies for reducing carbon footprints—including energy conservation, sustainable transportation models, recycling, conscious consumption, and the use of renewable energy—through illustrative examples. In this way, students were able to clearly observe how individual choices influence global climate change.
At the end of the workshop, students gained awareness of the environmental and social benefits of low-carbon lifestyles and had the opportunity to discuss steps that can be taken toward a sustainable future. The event made a strong contribution to the festival’s environmental focus and was followed with great interest by visitors.
